Mrs. Kristen Steele

Greetings!

I am a native of Huntsville, Alabama and have lived in the area all of my life. I attended Virgil I. Grissom High School at which I acquired my spark of interest in science after taking chemistry. I traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to attend college at the University of Alabama (*Roll Tide!).  After several experiences doing undergraduate research, summer internships, and tutoring opportunities, I discovered that teaching others the foundations and principles of science was more of my passion than laboratory research. I graduated from the university with a B.S. in Chemistry and a M.A. in Secondary Education Science. Beyond education, I love traveling with family, photography, music, and SEC football and gymnastics.

I began my teaching career at Tuscaloosa Magnet Middle School.  I taught 7th Grade Life Science and 8th Grade Physical Science for a semester as I completed my degree. I then taught at Buckhorn High School for four years.  Over that time, I taught Pre AP Chemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science and Principles of Physics.

I have been at James Clemens High School for several years now.  I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to help students explore the world of chemistry!  This year, students in Chemistry I, Pre AP Chemistry I, and AP Chemistry can look forward to several lab investigations and simulations.  They will receive many opportunities to work collaboratively with peers in the classroom that will develop skills (such as leadership, teamwork, organization and communication) to prepare them for college and/or career.

I truly love the subject I teach.  Students will use the following key features in my classroom:

  • Schoology for daily assignment updates and access to helpful course resources.
  • Flipped Learning in which basic instruction/review is completed at home through videos, simulations, and readings.  The majority of classroom time is spent investigating and applying science concepts via activities and lab (in class or virtual) experiments, and mastering concepts through discussion and practice.
  • Emphasis on Organization and Lab Skills. Students will practice various note-taking strategies and maintain an organized notebook. Students will regularly perform hands-on investigations using various lab techniques. Students will have several opportunities for data collection and analysis with their lab teams.

As a parent or student, please feel free to contact me regarding any questions or concerns by email.

Let's have a great year learning science!

  • Please be advised that we will no longer be accepting paper absence excuse notes.  All excuses need to be turned in through our attendance email, jchsattendance@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
